Gentleman's Ride

Photo poached from Buddy--thanks!

Mr. Vanderbacon outdid himself organizing today's Gentleman's Ride. Fifteen or so intrepid teams of 4-5 people embarked upon a 3.5 hour scavenger hunt in the wilds of Fair Hill, White Clay and surrounding environs.  The rules were dubious and course maps useless.  This was going to be a blast.

The event brought me back to my first group rides in the late '80s (yes, I've been at this that long) when the sport was new, exciting, and we were just happy to be out there pedaling around. You know--before everyone got a coach and became serious.  Serious buzzkills.

The first Gentleman's Ride went with nary a hitch (save poor Mr. Morrison who during a tumble protected his bike with his face). Oh, and Fort James' run in with the ground hornets.  Good thing there were waivers to sign.  But why dwell on the negative when the positives abound?
  • Great people
  • Great trails
  • Great food & drink
  • Great weather
I love this picture which I shameless poached from Buddy's Facebook posting. A bazillion acres to roam and our team, the Screaming Valkyries, kept running into Buddy's team. Thank God, because Buddy showed us a short cut that spared me hauling my fat ass up a rather daunting climb.  Give that man a beer!

Of course behind this great man is a Monkey. Special thanks to her for being an outstanding team leader. I think we were one crash and a few bee stings from victory.
You know who would have loved this ride?  That's right.
I took this on a ride a few weeks ago. Mega's influence extends beyond New England and remains at work here in the Mid-Atlantic. See you soon M & JD--tis the season!
