Winter, Spring, Summer, and Cross

Kelly Cline explains to his daughter the four seasons: winter, spring, summer and cross.  Local denizens could argue that the pre-season begins in August on those weekly evening rendezvous where you know what happens you know where and the official season opens in September.

I don't want to wait, so I declare it open season today.  And what better season opener than D. Lowe's Water Ice ride.  With my newly installed hospital-white bar tape to match my white saddle (it's all about the accoutrement) I arrived ready to noodle around on the cx bike.

There would be no noodling for me.  I nearly shit the bed when I arrived to find local fast guys and girls assembled for this two hour tour across tarmac and trail.   After zipping along the towpath, we ascended the Koppenberg where I quickly realized I'm in need of another gear.  And set of lungs.  And legs.  I made the ascent, but it was not pretty.  Many thanks to the group for waiting while I wheezed to the top.

It was all downhill from there.  In a good way.  Kudos to David Lowe for leading us on this adventure.  I'm still smiling.

CX season's arrival will be followed tomorrow with an epic mountain bike extravaganza which is being billed as "the most important event of your mountain bike season."  The entry fee of a 6 pack and a covered dish certainly makes it the most reasonably priced.  Pretty sure it's going to be a swell time.

My boys are traveling around to baseball games, collecting hats and bringing a little east coast crazy to the various ball parks. At least they made it back into the country--I feared their visit to Toronto could end in an international debacle.  Jimmy reports they made friends in the Motor City, and are now on their way to Cincinnati.  I miss them.
